Thanks to Jill Baxter for coming in and reading an Alaskan folktale to the class. She managed to capture their attention with her reading AND field some tough questions from the audience...all with a smile!
Thanks to Jacob's creative parents: Mary Macleod and Mike Mcsweeney for coming in for a second helping of Share a Snack. On the menu this time were butterfly (or shark) cupcakes. Frosting covered, chocolate and vanilla butterflies were seen flying into first grade mouths. The students were sensible about portion size and left over cupcakes were even sent home! We were very lucky to have professional storyteller Lynne Kirk come and tell us some stories. She used movement, rhythm, rhyme and lots of expression to make her stories entertaining. The students were full engrossed in her stories and have been retelling some of the stories ever since. If you would like to learn more about Lynne, refer to her website: www.ancestral-voices.com Thanks to Taro's mom, Yoko Bariquelo for coming in and reading a book to the class. The students enjoyed the book about Brazil and many were already discussing plans to visit Brazil for the next soccer world cup! (Please take Ms. Lawler along!)
The Hong Kong Flower Show amazed the first grade HKA students once again this year. This year's theme was hyancinth but the students were particularly impressed by the monuments of the world recreated in floral form. A very special thanks to all of the parents that went along with us. Once again, great outings such as these couldn't happen without your help! Thanks to Karma's parents, Saloni and Prem for coming in and sharing some of Karma's favorite snacks with his classmates. The students were delighted with their sushi snack during the Oceans of Books Literacy Week! Thanks to everyone who helped make Literacy Week so much fun. We had so many parents coming in to read, helping the kids to dress up and making it a great success! Thank you to Jacinta's mom (and room mom!) Julie Lau for coming in and reading Tashi to the class. The students loved the story and paid close attention to avoid missing any details!
Big thanks to Kai's mom, Yvonne Stephens for making meatball hedgehogs with the students. The students enjoyed adding vegetables and tooth picks to create delicious monsters! Very creative and yummy!
