We kicked off our new unit of inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves by playing a trading game. Students were given a selection of 5 stationary items and needed to trade with other students in order to have all 5 items. They had to use their communication skills and make thoughtful decisions about what they needed and what they had too much of. We played the game a few times and the students really got into the trading spirit!
A few first grade girls decided to make a difference in a big way and took action all of the first graders could enjoy. First Grade action stars Chloe, Tabitha, Isabella, Ezha, Brooke, Sophie, Bonnie and Mia worked along with Mr. Dean to try and help the world. They came up with a plan for students to bring in a gently used toy they would like to donate to children who may not have as many toys. Many toys were collected and a pancake breakfast was had to celebrate. Chloe Tan took the toys to a few different homes for children in the Philippines over the break and made a video of the experience which she shared with the first graders. Thanks again to all of the parents and students for supporting this endeavour!
The surprising cold did not slow down the first grade architects as they headed over to Sha Ha Beach to build houses they had co-designed with their group mates. The students spent 2 weeks designing and planning for homes they could build in the sand. The biting wind must have sped the process along as the homes were constructed in record time! They created a very diverse collection of homes. Look through the photos and you will see igloos, adobes, underground homes, caravans and even apartment buildings!
