We asked the students to work in groups to illustrate and discuss safe and organized ways of walking in lines. They were ready for the task and enjoyed sharing their work with the class. Some students were real thinkers and decided to also discuss the safe way for walking up and down stairs. (Something we do a LOT of at HKA)
HKA's resident Occupational Therapist, Miss Maggie, came to visit the class today to talk about ways of regulating our energy levels in order to focus and feel more comfortable. Students were introduced to key language to identify when they are feeling as if they have high and low energy and also a few strategies to help monitor their energy levels. The students particularly loved the demonstrations of effective breathing and the discussion on everyone's favorite topic...ice cream!
Chloe's parents, Eugene and Ann were risk-takers yesterday when they came in to be our very first mystery readers. As veteran G1ài parents, they knew the excitement that mystery readers bring to the class and they were ready for the challenge! Eugene read The Paper Boy by Dav Pilkey and Anne read Knuffle Bunny Free by Mo Willems. The students loved the books and guest readers and best of all...Chloe was totally surprised! Who will be our next mystery reader? Please sign up at Back to School Night, September 2.
During our first few days of first grade, students got the chance to meet and work with their fifth grade buddies. They will continue to work with their buddies weekly throughout the school year. Students were also introduced to Math Centers this week. They learned their first partner math game, "Race to 20" and also worked with Marcy Cook titles consolidating their number sense.
