Today HKA held its annual Lunar New Year Assembly. All the students and teachers came to school wearing their most magnificent Chinese style clothes. There were such an array of colours and designs!!! Both 1ai and 1ren performed a dance to the beautiful song called 'Where is spring'. The students did a great job remembering their moves, singing and dancing. Well done! Here we have a few pictures we took with our classroom camera. Take a look.
Following our Lunar New Year Assembly, 1ai students had another wonderful event to enjoy - Share A Snack! This time it was Meika's mom Mesh who brought Crazy Faces into our classroom. Crazy Faces is a collection of various healthy foods such as crackers, pasta, cheese, carrots, sweet peas, raisins, ham and seaweed. For their snacks students used all of these ingredients and arranged them on crackers to make all kinds of tasty faces. Kids had so much fun! Thank you very much, Mesh.
It was great!!!
As part of our unit on How We Organise Ourselves which looks into needs and wants people have as well as goods and services, we visited the Raiz The Bar chocolate factory. This wonderful opportunity comes to us from one of the HKA families who are involved into a small business of chocolate making. Visiting the factory was fantastic! Our students saw how the factory is set up and how it operates. They learned about the process of chocolate making starting from the harvesting the cocoa beans, processing them and making various kinds of chocolates. At the end of the tour they also were able to make their own mini chocolate duckies by pouring warmed up liquid chocolate into moulds. That was so much fun! Big THANKS to our supporting parents who went with us on the trip - your help is appreciated. Enjoy the chocolates!
Running a bit of ahead of time, we have decided to peek a little into our next Unit of Inquiry - Sharing The Planet - by going on the field trip to learn about a very special type of trees called mangroves which grow in this type of climate on the seashore. This serves as a provocation for the inquiry and gives students plenty of ideas to wonder about nature.
The fieldtrip was possible because of a group of visiting teacher students from New York University. They have prepared, organised and led all the activities. It was really a treasure to have them around, and, I'm sure, they have gained plenty of experience working with G1s.
Today's share a snack event was all about fruits! Niall's mom Alane brought strawberries, raspberries, apples and bananas! On top of that there were three choices of frozen yogurt - vanilla, chocolate, and berries - accompanied with some goldfish crackers. Kids created all sorts of colourful and healthy snacks for themselves. That was fun and very tasty! Thank you, Alane

As part of our unit How We Organize Ourselves, today students in 1ai were learning all about goods and services. We looked at parents' jobs that students collected for their last homework and decided that the jobs belonged to two major categories: either goods or services. Making such decisions was not easy. Lots of thinking and discussion went into it. At the end we also asked students to come up with their own ideas of goods and services they use in life. This was a very thought-provoking lesson!
