HKA Literacy Week has had a great start in 1ai! Monday was all about picture books. So kids participated in a few major activities: DEAR - Drop Everything And Read, read aloud, and decorating classroom door with the pictures of favourite books. Celebrating literacy is a great way to promote and encourage reading! Great job, 1ai!!!
Grade 1 has started a new unit of inquiry Sharing The Planet. The unit is about plants and gardening with the central idea being 'Caring for plants is essential for survival'. The focus of the inquiry will be on the structure and needs of plants, the connection between plants and humans, and helping the environment. To introduce our students to this unit we had a few tuning in activities for them to engage in. One of them was to sort out different kinds of dry seeds (beans) so that they can notice the difference in color, size and shape. The other one was to look closely at a variety of fruits and notice what kind of seeds each fruit has, how many seeds and how they look. The students also started on their Gardener's Log recording their thinking and reflections about the unit.
Preparing for the Market Day takes a lot of effort. Beside deciding on their product or service and making goods, students also have to think about the pricing and marketing. To do just that the students in 1ai have conducted a market survey asking all the classmates how much they would pay for the offered product or good. That was a very helpful way to determine the price. The next step is to prepare your shop and advertise it. To do that, they started to work on their shop posters making them big and colorful to attract as many customers as possible.
Yes! The MARKET DAY has finally arrived!!! It plays an absolute pivotal role in our Unit of Inquiry on trading. After weeks of learning about money, preparation, thinking, making products and preparing services, the students' efforts have finally paid off. The kids got to set up their own shops, display posters, and TRADE! During the Market Day they not only learned how to sell and buy things but also how to save money, be mindful about their choices, be helpful and polite to each other, and how to take turns. Market Day was an amazing event filled with fun and laughter and gaining students lots of experience! Great job, 1ai!!!
P.S. Videos will come soon
Today as usual we had our Mystery Reader come into our classroom. And it was Rishi's mom Rina who proved us that she is anything but a usual reader. It turned out that instead of reading all of these usual books, she led the class to create stories by themselves and be creative as much as they could be. That was FANTASTIC! Kids really enjoyed it. Thank you, Rina.
Today, February 3rd 2016, marks the 100th Day of School!!! In preparation for this big event we asked our students to bring collections of 100 different objects to school such as straws, paper clips, cotton balls, lego pieces, etc. It was a very interesting process for them to guess first what was in the boxes, and then also, as a connection to maths, we asked them to arrange their items in groups of 5s, 10s and 20s. There were some other optional activities as well. But the main point here was to celebrate students' achievement in math and inspire them to learn in a fun way.
